5 best mushroom coffees – from best to worst

In this blog, I tested 5 of the most popular mushroom coffees and ranked them from best to worst. I compared taste, energy, ingredients, price, and the overall experience — from Coffee 2.0 to Four Sigmatic, Ryze, Everyday Dose, and Mud/Wtr. If you’re thinking about switching to mushroom coffee, this review will save you a lot of time (and money).

5 najboljših kav z gobami – od najboljše do najslabše

As a long-time coffee lover, I've always had a “love/hate” relationship with caffeine. I adored the ritual, but the anxiety, afternoon crash, brain fog, and digestive issues kept getting worse.

That’s when I first heard about mushroom coffee. The trend is growing every day, and it seems that more and more people in Slovenia are replacing their morning coffee with these blends. Mushroom coffee mixes classic coffee or cacao with medicinal mushrooms and adaptogens — promising calm, steady energy, better focus, and even long-term benefits.

But here’s the thing: not all mushroom coffees are the same. Some are delicious and effective, while others fall completely flat.

So I decided to test all the most popular brands — each for 12 days in a row, with weekends off to reset. Some pleasantly surprised me, others disappointed me, and one completely changed my mornings.

Here is the final ranking — from best to worst:

1. Coffee 2.0

Pros:

  • The taste was a 10/10 for me! The cacao vanilla flavor was the best of all — creamy, tasty, warm, almost like hot cacao. If it didn’t have caffeine, I’d drink it all day.

  • I also tried the coffee flavor — 9/10. It satisfies the coffee craving and really resembles coffee, just slightly instant-like, so of course it can't compete with a premium espresso. But it’s still far better than other mushroom coffees.

  • No jitters, no crash, no afternoon exhaustion. Focus lasted up to 7 hours for me without needing a second cup.

  • I was calmer, less anxious, yet very productive — and I even slept better than with regular coffee.

  • The most complete formula I’ve found: 5 functional mushrooms (lion’s mane, cordyceps, reishi, chaga, shiitake) + 7 adaptogens + collagen for skin and digestion.

  • A large 240 g bag — it feels like it lasts forever. I'm on day 21 and still have more than half left.

  • You get free gifts (frother, metal cup, spoon), and they’re actually premium, not cheap add-ons.

  • Made in Europe from quality, natural ingredients.

Cons:

  • Only one main flavor (cacao/vanilla) and one coffee version. I hope they add matcha or chai soon.

  • Price is higher — around €39.90 for 30 servings. With subscription about €29 + gifts.

  • Contains collagen, so it's not suitable for vegans. My friend wouldn't drink it because of this, and I also wish they had a vegan option.

2. Four Sigmatic

Pros:

  • I liked the taste, but it wasn’t as good as #1. Good coffee notes, but very strong, dark coffee and the mushroom flavor is still noticeable.

  • Available in ground, instant, and whole-bean versions.

  • Huge product selection: supplements, drinks, proteins, creams…

  • Tested for mycotoxins and mold, high-quality organic ingredients.

  • They offer a money-back guarantee.

Cons:

  • It made me nervous.

  • It has 65 mg of caffeine, which should be “half the caffeine”, but honestly it doesn't feel like much less. Average coffee has about 100 mg.

  • Expensive (€1.45 per serving or €1.20 with subscription) + shipping.

  • Despite claims of “no mushroom taste”, I could still taste the mushrooms.

  • Hard to understand the differences between products like “Think” and “Focus”. A lot of overlap and confusion.

3. Everyday Dose

Pros:

  • Tasty, smooth, not too “mushroomy”, but also not as rich as Coffee 2.0. More like cacao than coffee.

  • Instant powder that dissolves easily in hot or cold drinks.

  • The brand presents itself as a “microdose drink” — coffee, collagen, mushrooms, and nootropics in one scoop.

  • High-quality ingredients, third-party tested.

  • Money-back guarantee.

Cons:

  • The energy is very mild. After 2–3 hours I needed another cup.

  • About €45 for 30 servings, around €1.50 per serving — expensive.

  • Only one flavor and doesn’t resemble coffee — more of a cacao blend.

  • Contains collagen, so not vegan.

  • Branding feels very “biohacker”, which may not be for everyone.

4. Ryze

Pros:

  • Contains 6 functional mushrooms — more than many other brands.

  • Lower price (around €0.90 per serving), one of the most affordable.

  • Very easy to mix with hot water — no frother needed.

  • Contains plant-based creamer, so the drink is naturally creamy and convenient for travel.

Cons:

  • Very earthy, strong mushroom flavor. This is for hardcore mushroom lovers. It didn’t satisfy my coffee craving.

  • Only available via subscription. You can buy once and cancel, but it’s an unnecessary complication.

  • The formula is too diluted — a little of every mushroom = low potency.

  • Complicated return policy, no real guarantee.

5. Mud/Wtr

Pros:

  • 4 functional mushrooms + spices like cinnamon and turmeric.

  • Tested for mycotoxins and mold, all ingredients are organic.

  • One-time purchase available, no subscription required.

  • Part of the revenue goes to mental health programs.

Cons:

  • The taste was both bland and bitter. The turmeric was too dominant.

  • Very little caffeine (1/7 of a cup of coffee). Great for people getting off caffeine, not ideal for coffee lovers.

  • Watery unless you add a lot of creamer — which kind of defeats the “healthy coffee” concept.

  • Sandy texture — doesn’t mix well, even with a frother.

  • Very expensive: $1.67 per serving ($1.33 with subscription) + $5 shipping.

Final verdict

My favorite mushroom coffee in Slovenia is Coffee 2.0.

I even did a blind taste test among my top 3 — with my sister (former barista) and my husband (self-proclaimed coffee lover). Coffee 2.0 was #1 for both. The taste, the complete formula, the long-lasting energy, and the best price-to-quality ratio — far ahead of the competition.
